Deep Space Nine

Originally situated near the planet Bajor. Deep Space Nine has been moved to a nearby stable wormhole, where its value as the last port of call before the Gamma Quadrant makes it a strategic location.

The space station designated Deep Space Nine by Starfleet is located in the Denorios Belt, aFive-hour trip from the planet Bajor at standard orbit speed. The station, originally called Terok Nor, is built by the Cardasslans using a Bajoran work force in 2351. At this time, it is used to monitor mining operations on Bajor itself, and to service both the miners and the mining ships traveling to and from the planet. Abandoned by the Cardassians during their withdrawal from the Bajoran system in 2369, Deep Space Nine is placed under Starfleet administration by the Bajoran Provisional Government.Under the direct control of then-Commander Benjamin Sisko it is moved to the Denorios Belt, from its former position in orbit around Bajor, following the discovery of a stable wormhole, which provides an important commercial link with the Gamma Quadrant. With approximately 300 permanent residents, plus 50 Starfleet personnel, Deep Space Nine is capable of holding a maximum of 7,000 beings. The station is divided into 19 sections, connected by access conduits of 2m thick duranium, a substance which is impenetrable to most known scanning technology.Refiltration systems, based on Romulan technology, are RCL Type 1 units. Kataran forcefields are used as a security measure for sealing areas of the station, although the doors at main junctions have a duranium inlay, which requires a bipolar torch to cut through. Flow conduits of the power distribution system only have one regulator per level, which is below Starfleet engineering standards.

Weapon detection sensors are located on the Promenade entrances, and other major access points on the station. Although the Cardassians strip the station of all defense capabilities when they leave, it is upgraded by Starfleet between 2371 and 2372, in response to the threat from the Jem'Hadar. Phaser banks and photon torpedo launchers are installed in the rings and pylons, making the station one of the most heavily defended outposts in the Alpha Quadrant

Life on Deep Space Nine

Operations (or Ops) controls the main hub of activity, with shuttle bays accommodating smaller vessels. On a given day there might be anywhere from 10 to 300 visitors, as ships come through carrying foreigners, scientists, merchants, and spies. Most of the visitors stay on their ships, but there are also special quarters for guests on the station itself. The habitat ring, which encircles the central core of the station, is primarily filled with quarters and other living facilities for personnel. Three runabout launch pads can also be found on the ring.
